Caelan Doris Makes Ireland Team While Joe McCarthy Left Out

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Newly reappointed head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn matches, however Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, though his fitness is uncertain if he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in the US on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the opening Lions Test against Australia in July.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Nash also miss out due to injury, while full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing a hip operation after the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities says new provincial pair Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped western province wing Bolton will travel to Chicago as "cover".

After playing the New Zealand at Soldier Field in a rematch of their 2016 meeting, the team will play Japan, Australia and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for those who made their debuts on the recent tour to the Lelos and the Lobos," commented Farrell, back to national team duties after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a mostly experienced selection, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again vie for the starting number 10 position. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as the two players poised to face off for the first occasion in Saturday's URC game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third fly-half selected as Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, the Ireland boss has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test victories over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for Connacht's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is additionally a leading candidate to cover for Keenan at number 15.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger impressed on his first Ireland outings during the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and Portugal.

Paddy McCarthy is the sole new addition in the Irish forwards. The front rower has started two of his province's three league matches this season and played in the second string's loss by the English in Bristol previously.

The 22-year-old was included in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not receive a cap.

Munster second row Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is retained, while experienced Ulster lock Iain Henderson returns after missing the summer tour.

Jack Conan, who started all three Lions Tests over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to play New Zealand.

The national team will assemble in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
